What It Is
ALT is an enzyme found mainly in the liver. When liver cells are damaged, ALT is released into the bloodstream.
Why It Matters
ALT is one of the most sensitive markers for liver cell damage, helping to detect conditions such as fatty liver disease or hepatitis early.
If Levels Are High
Elevated ALT may indicate liver inflammation, fatty liver disease, hepatitis, or damage from medication or alcohol.
If Levels Are Low
Low ALT levels are generally not a concern and are considered normal.
Preparation
No special preparation is usually required. Avoid heavy alcohol consumption for 24 hours beforehand.
How Often to Test
Annually, or more frequently if you have risk factors for liver disease.
