What It Is
ASO is an antibody produced in response to streptolysin O, a toxin made by Group A Streptococcus bacteria.
Why It Matters
Elevated ASO titres indicate a recent streptococcal infection and can help evaluate post-infection complications.
If Levels Are High
High ASO may indicate a recent strep infection or complications such as rheumatic fever or glomerulonephritis.
If Levels Are Low
Low levels are normal and indicate no recent streptococcal infection.
