Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST)

Liver blood

What It Is

AST is an enzyme found in the liver, heart, and muscles. It is released when these tissues are damaged.

Why It Matters

AST helps assess liver health, particularly when evaluated alongside ALT. The ratio of AST to ALT can provide diagnostic clues.

If Levels Are High

Elevated AST may indicate liver damage, heart muscle injury, or muscle breakdown.

If Levels Are Low

Low AST levels are generally normal and not a concern.

Preparation

No special preparation usually required.

How Often to Test

Annually as part of liver function testing.
