Cystatin C
What It Is
Cystatin C is a protein produced by all nucleated cells and filtered by the kidneys.
Why It Matters
Cystatin C provides an alternative estimate of kidney function, less affected by muscle mass than creatinine.
If Levels Are High
Elevated cystatin C suggests reduced kidney filtration capacity.
If Levels Are Low
Low levels are generally not clinically significant.
Preparation
No special preparation required.
How Often to Test
As clinically indicated, particularly when creatinine may be unreliable.
