Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR)
What It Is
eGFR estimates how well your kidneys filter waste from the blood, calculated from creatinine, age, and sex.
Why It Matters
eGFR is the primary measure used to stage chronic kidney disease and monitor kidney function over time.
If Levels Are High
A high eGFR is generally normal and indicates good kidney filtration.
If Levels Are Low
A low eGFR indicates reduced kidney function and may require further investigation.
Preparation
No special preparation required beyond what is needed for creatinine.
How Often to Test
Annually, or more frequently if at risk of kidney disease.
