Folic Acid
What It Is
Folic acid (vitamin B9) is essential for DNA synthesis, red blood cell production, and foetal development.
Why It Matters
Deficiency can cause a specific type of anaemia and is particularly important before and during early pregnancy.
If Levels Are High
High folate is rarely problematic and usually reflects supplementation or diet.
If Levels Are Low
Low folate can cause megaloblastic anaemia, fatigue, and is a concern in early pregnancy.
Preparation
No special preparation required.
