What It Is

FSH is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles in women and sperm production in men.

Why It Matters

FSH levels help assess fertility, menstrual irregularities, and menopausal status.

If Levels Are High

Elevated FSH in women may indicate menopause or diminished ovarian reserve. In men, it may suggest testicular dysfunction.

If Levels Are Low

Low FSH may indicate pituitary dysfunction or be suppressed by certain medications.

Preparation

Women: best measured on day 2–5 of the menstrual cycle unless advised otherwise.
