Gamma-Glutamyltransferase (GGT)

Liver blood

What It Is

GGT is a liver enzyme that helps transport amino acids and peptides. It is sensitive to alcohol and bile duct issues.

Why It Matters

GGT is the most sensitive enzymatic marker for bile duct disease and is commonly elevated with regular alcohol use.

If Levels Are High

Elevated GGT may indicate liver disease, bile duct obstruction, or excessive alcohol consumption.

If Levels Are Low

Low GGT is normal and not a concern.

Preparation

Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before the test.

How Often to Test

Annually, or as clinically indicated.
