HbA1c

Metabolic blood

What It Is

HbA1c reflects your average blood sugar levels over the past 2–3 months by measuring glucose attached to haemoglobin.

Why It Matters

HbA1c is the gold standard for diagnosing diabetes and monitoring long-term blood sugar control.

If Levels Are High

Elevated HbA1c indicates poor blood sugar control and may confirm diabetes or pre-diabetes.

If Levels Are Low

Very low HbA1c may indicate hypoglycaemia or certain blood disorders.

Preparation

No fasting required.

How Often to Test

Every 3–6 months if diabetic; annually for screening.
