HDL Cholesterol
What It Is
HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol helps remove other forms of cholesterol from the bloodstream.
Why It Matters
Higher HDL levels are associated with lower cardiovascular risk. It is often called 'good' cholesterol.
If Levels Are High
Very high HDL is generally protective, though extremely high levels are being studied for potential risks.
If Levels Are Low
Low HDL increases cardiovascular risk, particularly in combination with elevated LDL or triglycerides.
Preparation
Fasting for 10–12 hours is recommended for accurate lipid measurements.
How Often to Test
Annually as part of a lipid profile.
