What It Is
IgM is the first antibody produced in response to a new infection.
Why It Matters
IgM levels help identify acute infections and can be elevated in certain autoimmune conditions.
If Levels Are High
Elevated IgM may indicate an acute infection, autoimmune disease, or Waldenström's macroglobulinaemia.
If Levels Are Low
Low IgM may increase vulnerability to infections.
