What It Is

MCV measures the average size of red blood cells, helping to classify different types of anaemia.

Why It Matters

MCV is a key parameter in distinguishing between iron deficiency (small cells) and B12/folate deficiency (large cells) anaemia.

If Levels Are High

High MCV (macrocytic) may indicate vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, liver disease, or hypothyroidism.

If Levels Are Low

Low MCV (microcytic) typically indicates iron deficiency or thalassaemia trait.
