Microalbumin / Creatinine Ratio

Kidney urine

What It Is

The ACR measures small amounts of albumin in the urine relative to creatinine, detecting early kidney damage.

Why It Matters

Microalbuminuria is one of the earliest signs of diabetic kidney disease and can prompt early intervention.

If Levels Are High

Elevated ACR indicates increased albumin leakage from the kidneys, suggesting early nephropathy.

If Levels Are Low

A normal ACR indicates healthy kidney filtration with no abnormal protein loss.

Preparation

First morning urine sample is preferred.

How Often to Test

Annually for those with diabetes or hypertension.
