What It Is
Urine protein measures the amount of protein present in the urine, which should normally be minimal.
Why It Matters
Proteinuria can be an early sign of kidney damage, particularly in diabetes and hypertension.
If Levels Are High
Elevated urine protein may indicate kidney disease, urinary tract infection, or strenuous exercise.
If Levels Are Low
Minimal or absent protein in urine is normal.
Preparation
First morning sample is preferred.
How Often to Test
Annually for those at risk of kidney disease.
