What It Is
Small dense LDL particles are a subtype of LDL cholesterol that are more easily oxidised and more atherogenic.
Why It Matters
Higher proportions of small dense LDL are associated with greater cardiovascular risk, even when total LDL is normal.
If Levels Are High
Elevated small LDL indicates increased atherogenic risk beyond standard LDL measurement.
If Levels Are Low
Lower levels of small LDL are considered more favourable.
Preparation
Fasting for 10–12 hours is recommended.
