What It Is
Total bilirubin measures the overall level of bilirubin, a yellow pigment produced by the breakdown of red blood cells.
Why It Matters
Elevated bilirubin can cause jaundice and may indicate liver disease, bile duct obstruction, or haemolysis.
If Levels Are High
High bilirubin may indicate liver disease, gallstones, or Gilbert's syndrome (a harmless genetic condition).
If Levels Are Low
Low bilirubin is normal and not a clinical concern.
Preparation
