What It Is

Why It Matters

PSA is used to screen for prostate conditions, including benign enlargement and prostate cancer.

If Levels Are High

Elevated PSA may indicate benign prostatic hyperplasia, prostatitis, or prostate cancer.

If Levels Are Low

Low PSA is generally reassuring regarding prostate health.

Preparation

Avoid ejaculation, vigorous exercise, and cycling for 48 hours before the test.

How Often to Test

Discuss with your clinician; commonly offered to men over 50.
