Transferrin

Vitamins & Minerals blood

What It Is

Transferrin is a protein that transports iron in the blood from sites of absorption to sites of use and storage.

Why It Matters

Transferrin levels help assess iron metabolism and differentiate between types of anaemia.

If Levels Are High

High transferrin indicates iron deficiency, as the body produces more to maximise iron capture.

If Levels Are Low

Low transferrin may indicate chronic disease, liver disease, or iron overload.

Preparation

Morning fasting sample preferred.

How Often to Test

As clinically indicated alongside iron studies.
