Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
What It Is
TSH is produced by the pituitary gland and controls how much thyroid hormone the thyroid gland produces.
Why It Matters
TSH is the most sensitive screening test for thyroid dysfunction, detecting problems before symptoms appear.
If Levels Are High
Elevated TSH suggests hypothyroidism — the thyroid is not producing enough hormone.
If Levels Are Low
Low TSH may indicate hyperthyroidism — the thyroid is producing too much hormone.
Preparation
No special preparation required. Morning sample preferred.
How Often to Test
Annually, or more frequently if on thyroid medication.
