What It Is

Uric acid is a waste product from the breakdown of purines, found in certain foods and produced by the body.

Why It Matters

Elevated uric acid can cause gout and is associated with kidney stones and cardiovascular risk.

If Levels Are High

High uric acid increases the risk of gout and kidney stones.

If Levels Are Low

Low uric acid is uncommon and usually not clinically significant.

Preparation

Avoid high-purine foods and alcohol for 24 hours before testing.

How Often to Test

As clinically indicated, or annually if history of gout.
