What It Is
Urobilinogen is a substance produced from bilirubin breakdown by gut bacteria. Small amounts are normally found in urine.
Why It Matters
Abnormal urobilinogen levels can indicate liver disease or haemolysis.
If Levels Are High
Elevated urobilinogen may indicate liver disease, haemolytic anaemia, or increased red blood cell breakdown.
If Levels Are Low
Absent urobilinogen may suggest bile duct obstruction.
